Tell us a little about how you got started in interior design:
My love for design started when I was really young. I grew up in 5 different homes in the same neighborhood because my father would remodel them and sell them. He owned a paint store, so I worked for him mixing and delivering paint. Later he focused on being a homebuilder and I would go to his job sites and take it all in. I loved analyzing the spaces and the design. After I graduated from college I worked for a design studio in Salt Lake City before I moved to Orange County with my husband. I worked in design there and owned a staging company with my husband that we would do on the weekends. I stopped working to have my 4 children, but I new I would pick it up again when the time was right. I feel lucky to be able to design again, I’ve always had a passion for it.
How do you manage a busy career and being a mom to 4?
I have to try and be very organized and not procrastinate. My days definitely go at a fast pace. I like to be done with work when my kids get home from school because at that point I’m running to soccer, piano, guitar, making dinner and getting caught up on their day. My number 1 role is being a mother. It’s important to me to pick up my kids from school and be the first face they see at the end of their school day. I like to be hands on and it’s very important to me to be present. My husband often travels so one thing we do to stay connected is a weekly tradition of family night. Sometimes it’s just going out to the soccer field behind our house and kicking the ball around, but we always set aside that time.
What can we do at home to update a room without a complete redesign?
Adding life with plants has a big impact. You can have a new plant in a kitchen with nothing else and it will make it feel pretty and fresh. I love using baskets and unique pottery as planters to add interest.
New pillows can really update a space. Consider vintage, batik, watercolor and mud cloth pillows to freshen up your living areas and bedrooms. And don’t be afraid to have fun with a pop of color in a bright pink or color you love.
I’m a big believer in a fresh coat of paint. It will transform a room. My go to is Benjamin Moore white white with no pigment. It creates a clean foundation for your décor while making your home feel bright and airy.
I know how much you LOVE fashion. What’s hot on your list for spring?
I’m inspired by the blush pantone color of 2016 – Rose Quartz. I’m been picking up a few items with it in mind. I just got back from Australia and I love how laid back and cool the style is there. Byron Bay was so inspiring from everything to fashion and interior décor. I had a chance to visit the Spell store and I feel in love with everything.
I picked up this blush spell crossbody – silk it’s a going out bag great for date nights and also this Spell dress. My go to favorite denim are Frame skinny jeans or the Le High Flare. I love Iro leather jackets!
Top 3 beauty must-haves:
Nars Lip Gloss – Sweet Dreams
Bobby Brown Shimmer Brick for eyes and cheeks– great all purpose.
Jo Malone three combo – I use everyday – French Lime Blossom, Nectarine Blossom and Honey and Wild Bluebell
Where do you see Becki Owens design 5 years from now?
Right now my biggest focus is my children, even though my business has been growing faster than I expected. I’ve been adding to my team and working on amazing new projects. It’s keeping me busy. In 5 years, my kids will be at different stages so I might have more time to grow even more. But for now I love designing, having a lifestyle blog and taking things as they come. I’m grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way.
