A few weeks ago I posted THIS picture of a tee I purchased online. Then I saw on Instagram, my talented friend Cindi had re-created the same tee using inexpensive shirts and old tees from her closet. I hate to admit that her budget friendly version turned out even better than the tee I paid way too much for. You can find Cindi’s creations on Instagram @independentees!
1. For this tutorial, I used a Camo Tee and a black & white stripe Skirt. Both items, I already had.
2. Turn the Camo Tee inside out. Using a seam ripper, cut the threads attaching the sleeve to the Tee.
3. Take one of the Camo sleeves, rip the seam, and open it up to use as a template. Lay the Camo Tee sleeve on the new fabric (I like to iron it out so its easier to cut) pin if you wish, and cut out your new sleeve.
4.Take your new sleeve, fold, pin, and using a straight stitch, hem your sleeve on the sewing machine.
5. Take your newly hemmed sleeve, fold it in half, pin, and stitch creating your under arm seam. *For the rest of the tutorial (including this step) I use a 4 thread Serger. I like the Serger because it creates a finished look, it strengthens your seam, as well as allows the seam to be flexible/stretchy.
6. Taking your new sleeve, match up your sleeve seam with the under arm seam of the Camo tee and pin. I like to have the Camo Tee inside out during this step which makes it easier for me to see what I’m doing. This is the only step that requires brain function… LOL. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to redo a sleeve because I was distracted by my kids, phone, TV, etc. So FOCUS!
7. Using your machine of choice, stitch your new sleeve to your Tee.
8. And… Voila! You’re Done!

My girls have some shirts that need this done! One question- let’s say you don’t have a serger but you do have a super old Hello Kitty sewing machine that does basic stitches…what setting would you use for t-shirt fabric since it’s so stretchy? Would just a zig zag work?
This is the cutest! Love all the independenTees!
