I had the privilege of interviewing my friend Shea of Shea McGee Designs as one of our Real Moms and this girl has got it going on. Let me start off by saying that decorating homes is not my speciality so I’m very intrigued by how people like Shea pull beautiful rooms together. It’s pure talent. I have known Shea since before she was a mommy and it’s so fun to see her with beautiful little daughter Wren (who happened to turn 1 just yesterday)!
Here is a peek into Wren’s nursery.
1. Have you always had a creative eye for design? At what age did you know it was something you wanted to do?
I’ve always been interested in making things pretty, but it took me awhile to realize that interior design was the perfect mix of creativity and business for me. I received my degree in communications, but a few years later had a strong inkling to study what I was truly passionate about. I was nervous and afraid that no one would hire me, but came to the conclusion that I just needed to do it for me. At 25, I went back to school to hone my skills and started my business at the same time – it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
2. In three words describe your style
Clean. Bright. Eclectic.
3. What is the most challenging part about your job?
Decorating is done one layer at a time. I wish it was like the TV shows where clients go on vacation and then come back to a whole new house, but it doesn’t work that way! Often clients get nervous when we only have the first layer installed and they cannot see the whole picture. It requires a lot of reassuring that the final result will be beautiful and cohesive. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said, “It will come together and look great. Trust me!”
4. What is your favorite thing about your job?
My favorite thing about my job is that I get to work from home! I do orders, paperwork and blog during nap time, and she goes with me on my shopping excursions. It might be a little crazy at times (a lot of times), but I wouldn’t change a thing.
5. What are the current trends in home decor right now?
Right now, home decor is all about the mix – making different styles and eras work together. Throw a mid-century modern piece into a transitional room or a French mirror into a contemporary one. However, my favorite trend right now is incorporating brass and gold accents into decor. Don’t be afraid to mix metals. Light fixtures, hardware or accessories – anything goes! Brass adds adds a little glamour into any space and I love it.
Shea was recognized by House Beautiful with this lovely room. What a huge accomplishment!
