fall and winter trends featuring Hudson Denim

There are few things that never go out of style. In my opinion, denim tops the list. I recently sat down with Matthew Hess, head of wash development at Hudson denim to get a glimpse of what to look forward to through winter.

Where do you find your inspiration when developing a new wash?

Honestly anything from street art, people on the street, the european runways, and old vintage pieces found lying on yard sale blankets.  Most of my inspiration really comes from observing how raw/unwashed denim abrades or ages naturally on the body after years of wear-it’s natural and organic how it happens. That is really my passion. I’m really kind of obsessive and nerdy about the whole thing.

What can we expect in denim for fall/winter?

With the big boom of color over the past couple of seasons, we wanted to give color a new life. We have added a leather-like coating, giving them an ultra sleek look and feel.  They have both the glamour and edge of leather pants but the comfort and wear-ability of our best selling “second skin” colors from seasons past.  For holiday we have even added a touch of glitter to the coating which gives an unexpected hint of elegance(trust me it is tastefully done).

Florals and polka dots were a hot pattern throughout the summer. Will we continue to see more floral and dots trending or is fashion denim moving more towards tribal and geometric patterns?

Florals will absolutely continue, but the trick is to not make it look like you deconstructed your great-auntie’s upholstered arm chair.   We have screen printed, digitally printed, sublimated, and lasered a vast range of patterns from basic geometrical color-blocking, aztec indian designs, victorian lace motifs, feathers, to a galaxy print derived from
an old arcade game.  Prints will also be come more of a prominent piece even into sprng ’13 with more real-life landscapes combined with other traditional wash techniques…stay tuned!

If I wanted to invest in one colored denim to carry me through the end of winter which color would you suggest?

It would have to be “Pomegranate” which is a pinky red on our skinny baby cord or “hot shot wax” which is a cool pink with a slight hint of blue to winter-ize it (that is a one of the fore mentioned coating skinny styles that I don’t think one could live without this winter season)…wait, you asked for 1 color?  I’m partial to a deep scarlet and crimsons. Have fun with it, be loud, and most of all don’t be afraid to splash a little color in your wardrobe.

Lets talk about fit. Skinnies don’t seem to be going anywhere which I appreciate for boot season but what other fit is either trending or making a comeback?

Wide legs and trousers always find their way back to the hearts of the people during this time of the year.   Tuxedo styles are going strong; we gave it a new twist. Also look for a few new “boyfriend” inspired looks with more feminine styling, they’ll help you balance your layering top to bottom.

I’ve heard several moms say they love the look of a patterned denim but are afraid they can’t pull it off. What would you suggest for a first time buyer?

Go for it!!!  If you believe you can pull it off, you will!  Own it!!!  Pair them with a mono-colored, easy top in which you just feel fabulous…and its a sure winner! However, If you are feeling a little skittish, start with a pair that has more of a tonal color palette, and get more daring as you become more comfy with all the extra attention.
