Lucy Jane's Best sugar cookies and cookbook

Cooking is an art that has been lovingly taught to us by many talented cooks in our lives!
Starting with our mom, who is a fabulous cook, and encouraged us to cook and bake and experiment with food during our years at home with her. Our family looked forward to our Sunday dinners, because that was when we shared great food, great conversations and spent time together.
Mom always made sure the food was something special, and of course, there was always a delicious desert to look forward to! She also taught us what the proper components of a meal are, and that it’s not only the food groups that matter, but color and composition as well. We learned to combine flavors, textures and colors and make those things work in harmony and taste amazing! Our Gram taught us to bake! Cookies, pies, candies and cakes were her specialty, and she took time with each of us to pass along those skills, as well as her favorite recipes. Many of Gram’s and Mom’s wonderful recipes are in our cookbook. Cooking and baking became a passion that we both share. We learned techniques and methods and recipes from friends, classes, church leaders and family members along the way. Then we started developing our own recipes and sharing them with each other, and with friends. We love getting together to try new dishes!

Secret Heavenly Sugar Cookies

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup heavy cream, at room temp (not milk… cream)
1 cup sugar
2 tsp vanilla
2 eggs, at room temp
4 tsp baking powder
4 cups flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Cream butter until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Cool in fridge overnight or for several hours. Roll out on floured board and cut with 3″ circle cookie cutter. Bake for 8-9 minutes, or until bottoms turn light brown.

Frosting

1 cup butter at room temp
8 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup milk at room temp
2 tsp vanilla

Cream butter until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add 4 cups of the sugar, the milk and the vanilla. Beat till smooth and creamy. Add the remaining sugar, one cup at a time, until frosting is desired consistency. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring.
We prefer to use a bag and pipe on our frosting, but you could certainly just use a knife to frost them as well.

Adorn with your favorite sprinkles!

Makes about 18 HUGE cookies.

*Note: these cookies are meant to be round. They don’t do particularly well when cut into other shapes as they tend to spread in baking.
