After you read about personal training pros and cons, I wrote a post about 5 things to Keep in your GYM BAG so you are always prepared.
Personal Training: Yes or No?
No doubt you all have heard this phrase: Summer bodies are made in the winter. Nothing could be more true… and some of you might be pushing up the deadline if you have a tropical spring break planned! Since I’ve used personal trainers off and on for the past three years I thought a discussion on the pros and cons would be helpful to anyone considering adding this to their fitness routine.
PROS:
1. Individual attention
Having someone sitting right by you, making sure you are using correct form and giving your best effort is invaluable. There’s no hiding in the back row of a group class; it’s all eyes on you, and it becomes impossible to not give 100%.
2. Customized workouts
A trainer will meet with you before your first session to assess your fitness goals and tailor a workout just for you. If your posture is a concern, he/she will teach you exercises to strengthen your back and bring your shoulders back. Maybe you want a Kardashian-esque booty? Your trainer will get you doing so many step ups your legs will be jelly by the end of the session. Or maybe you are post baby and need your abs to peek through again. Whatever your goals are, your trainer is there to cheer you on 100% and help you create the body you feel confident in.
Learning exactly what to do to obtain the body you want is knowledge you carry with you for the rest of your life. And feeling comfortable using the equipment on the gym floor is a big confidence boost! No more watching others and copying what they do, hoping you’re doing it right… not to mention risking injury.
3. Accountability
Knowing you will have to check in with someone once or twice per week will help you stay focused when you aren’t with the trainer. Weighing in looming helps when the ice cream is calling your name at 10 PM. You know you’ll be asked what your week-long activity was and this will spur you into action more frequently.
4. Commitment
Sometimes just spending the money on a trainer is what makes people commit to changing. Humans are conditioned to value what we have to sacrifice or pay for… so if you’re giving up something to pay for your trainer (house cleaner, dinners out, new clothes) you’ll be more likely to take it seriously. And be ALL in.
5. Encouragement
Chemistry with your trainer is key; finding someone who is encouraging and ignites your desire to be better is huge. If you try a trainer several times and don’t feel uplifted or cheered on, move to another one. Your trainer should never belittle you or shame you. They are your (paid) cheerleader! Make them earn that money.
CONS
1. Individual attention
Haha… yes this can also be a con. For many of us, being in the weight room with someone entirely focused on us is UNCOMFORTABLE. Most of us are not attention hogs, and the idea of another human laser focused while watching us exercise makes us anxious. If you try a personal trainer and can’t get past this, group fitness may be more your thing.
2. Expen$e
It’s hella pricey to have a personal trainer. At my gym, a single session with a top tier trainer is $140 bucks for an hour! There are ways to reduce this, such a maybe sharing a session with a friend who has similar goals. Or using a trainer not through a big gym. Some will even come to your house! You might have to lay out money for equipment though. Have you ever thought of online trainers? There are so may great options right now and you will still get the one on one when you ask for it. It’s way less expensive and definitely something to consider.
3. Time
It may take a while to find a trainer who is the right fit for you. This can get old after you’ve been through a few different trainers. Start with watching people at your gym; if you see a trainer who looks like they have a fun rapport with their clients, that may be the person for you. Or if there is a woman who’s body you wish you had, chances are it’s because of her trainer.
I like the personal attention I’m getting from my online trainer with figuring out my nutritional needs. I’m still reaching my goals and feeling so relieved I don’t have to eat broccoli and chicken (for every meal) for the rest of my life. I found out I have a gluten allergy. That’s why
my workout and eating like this always made my body feel better and not so off balance. It makes so much sense now. When I ate a differnet type of diet with higher carbs or anything with wheat I got so sick and bloated.I’ll be sharing more on my new 2017 eating habits but until then I’m loving how I feel off of gluten and I love eating ice cream without the guilt. Try it, it’s liberating.
And the last thing I want to mention today……
Happy Wednesday

I’d love to know which online trainer you use? Is it an app or an actual trainer? I’m looking for something similar for a gift for my husband and would love to get a recommendation. Thanks!
