Now that summer is winding down it’s time to get a little more aggressive with your skin routine. If you have gained a few more brown spots from the sun or struggle with hyperpigmentation issues this post is just for you. And maybe you can share your experience and insight with the rest of us. You may be the answer to someone’s problem. The best time to treat pigment issues is fall and winter when the sun isn’t as strong. I’ve struggled with Melasma (pregnancy mask) with all three of my kids. I’ve gotten pretty good at treating it but I definitely have to work at it. I attended a night with a celebrity dermatologist and she shared a few tips to beat pigmentation. I’m sure you can guess her first suggestion —
1. SUNSCREEN! Dr. Dennis Gross, Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF50.
2. The Obagi System has proven to be one of the best treatments around for hyperpigmentation. Ask your dermatologist about getting started.
3. If you struggle with Melasma she said DO NOT GET AN IPL (photofacial) This can and most likely will make your pigment spots turn into pigment patches. She shared that this laser treatment will be taken off the market very soon.
4. Vitamin C is key. I use CE FERULIC by Skin Ceuticals. ( ON SALE) It works as extra protection during the day to fight against the harmful ray’s of the sun.
5. Meladerm by Civant worked wonders for me. I saw a big difference when I started using this cream at night. under $50
6. Never leave your house without a hat or sunscreen. Get in the habit of making sure your make up even has SPF.
7. Ask your dermatologist about a Jessner peel. I just got one and it faded my pigment spots by 50%.
8. Hyperpigmentation can also be caused by birth control, medication or hormones. Talk to your doctor if you need to switch things up.
Hope this helps!

This was such a helpful post!! I was wondering what under eye serum/cream you might suggest?! I have been looking for a good one for a while without much success.
I love the eye balm from skin ceuticals. Also PCA makes a great one called eye excellence. I go back and forth between these two. hope that helps! xx
Thanks, I will check those out! Love your blog xo
Thanks Erin! xx
I just saw the dermatologist for the same thing this week and she recommended this sunscreen. She said it protects against UVA/B and visible sun which most sunscreens don’t do! It’s called EltaMD UV clear (SPF 46) and it’s great for melasma and acne. Love your blog! 🙂
