Anyone else feel like their skin might snap if they move to quickly? Itching like crazy all night long? The combo of freezing temps outside and heat blasting inside does a number on our skin. My whole family is struggling! I decided to do something about it and looked into the best ways to help replenish moisture to our skin.
Here are FIVE tips I’ve found really help my family combat winter skin.
1.Limit time in hot baths and showers. Yes, it feels so good to warm up in a scorching hot bath or shower. No, it’s not good for your skin! This is really hard for me, because I take a bath every single night. Try to keep the water at a temperature closer to warm than hot. And try keeping your time in the shower or bath to under 10 minutes. Intense heat from a hot shower or bath actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, leading to loss of moisture. I add this BATH OIL or another BATH OIL FAVORITE (D loves the smell of this one) to my water to help keep my skin hydrated. It actually helps a ton. When I get out of the bath I put this BODY OIL everywhere (don’t forget your heels!). I used this when I was pregnant as well. Best oil out there. Prevents stretch marks and keeps skin extra hydrated.I also pump ARGAN OIL (just body and hands, this on face made me break out) into my hand/body lotions. I use the FACE ARGAN OIL(doesn’t make me break out) on my hair and nails too.
2.The Three Minute Rule: You have less than three minutes to hydrate after coming out of the bath/shower. That’s not a lot of time! Several articles I read suggested that applying lotion before being completely dry helps seal in the water as well.
3.Switch up your creams. First find a NIGHT SLEEPING FACE MASK & LIP SLEEPING MASK. These instantly hydrate and leave you feeling dewy and looking 5 years younger. Find an ointment that is oil-based rather than water-based; the oil creates a protective layer on the skin thus retaining more moisture. BUT! Make sure the oil is not clogging; avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil, or almond oil are all good choices. Shea oil (or butter) is controversial because it can clog facial pores. Lotions containing “humectants” also attract moisture to the skin (glycerin, sorbitol, and alpha-hydroxy acids). Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is a great cream for day, and even though I know I sound like a broken record, WEAR SUNSCREEN. Yes even in the winter! You can use this for night –FRESH FACE CREAM If your skin is raw and red, however, even rich creams may be irritating if they are fragranced; use Aquaphor or raw coconut oil on dry patches around the nose or eyes.
4.Run a humidifier all winter long, not just for stuffy noses. HUMIDIFIERS put more moisture in the air, helping the skin stay hydrated. Try placing smaller humidifiers throughout your home; one in each bedroom is super helpful! Every person has one in my house. One of their chores is to fill it up at night. I’m a big believer in these.
5.Creamy Cleanser: If you make one change to your winter skin regimen, switch to a creamy cleanser for your face! These are all good options: Skin Ceutical Gentle Cleanser, or CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser.
After trying these tips above, a lukewarm bath with baking soda or oatmeal can help relieve dry, itchy skin. And if all else fails you probably need to visit a dermatologist. You may have a condition that simply isn’t dry skin, or something like eczema that requires a different treatment.
